Time:

11:00 am to 4:00 pm

Description:

'The Voice of the Land' is an exhibition by UBCO MFA student, Emerald Holt, which combines the exquisite sounds and colours of the landscape to create an expressive interactive installation.

Emerald Holt’s artistic investigation illuminates the local Okanagan environment as a poetic metaphor for visual music interpretation.

The work uses Holt’s original recorded soundscapes of the Okanagan environment taken over a two-year period and creates visualizations based on the four seasons. Her visual music composition is based on the interwoven melodies and visuals of the local landscape, creating an immersive media artwork that invites people to experience nature's marvellous vocabulary. She composed four movements of multiple experiences that correspond to the viewers’ presence in the Okanagan valley. In the interactive installation, the light source delineates the zone of interaction, where viewers can trigger sounds of prepared piano, flute and cello that she composed from specific bird songs that she recorded. In contrast to the rich polyphony of natural noises derived from the generative soundscape, the instrumental sounds add an additional layer of sonic dimension. By using real-time visual and audio processing, The Voice of the Land promotes unique connections between the local environment and the viewers’ experience of nature.

'The Voice of the Land' will be on view in the Members’ Gallery from January 29 to February 20 as part of the Living Things International Arts Festival.
