Amnesty International Annual Write for Rights Write-a-thon This is a world-wide annual event in which people send messages to governments regarding human rights concerns such as people being imprisoned for speaking out against injustice. Last year over 3.5 million messages were sent world-wide.
Cards and letters of solidarity to prisoners of conscience and human rights defenders are also signed and sent. December 10th is the date in 1948 that the United Nations proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to be the law for all people everywhere. Its thirty articles define the rights that people are entitled to including the rights to freedom of association, speech, life, liberty and security of person. This year, letters will be sent to the Canadian government In June, Yecenia Armenta was freed after being held for four years and suffering torture, rape and threats to kill her children Pressure on Mexican authorities brought about her release Afterwards she said, "To everyone who stood by me, I give my hearatfelt thanks. Without this support, my freedom would have been almost impossible. I want to thank you and to urge you to continue your efforts; don't stop the beautiful work you are doing for the human rights of others. Sometimes justice is delayed, but it comes." Everyone is welcome and encouraged to participate for whatever amount of time they have.
